No Federer or Nadal opens up the 2021 US Open to the next generation of men’s tennis

It’s been four years since the ATP announced the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals, an event for the best under-21 players in the world.

Though Hyeon Chung of South Korea won the title, the qualifiers for the first event in 2017 included Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Denis Shapovalov and Karen Khachanov, while Stefanos Tsitsipas was an alternate.

On Monday, the US Open live stream begins with five of those six players ranked in the top 10. The next generation of rising stars are not just coming, they’re already here.

And yet, there’s still a problem. Since Roger Federer won his first Slam title at Wimbledon in 2003, 60 of the 71 Slam events have been won either by the Swiss, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka briefly broke the stranglehold with three Slam wins apiece but since Wawrinka won the US Open in 2016, the only win by a non-big-three player was at last year’s US Open, when Dominic Thiem won his first Slam.

World No. 1 Djokovic is a strong favorite to win this year’s US Open, which coincidentally would also make him the first man to win all four majors in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969. But there is a growing feeling that the passing of the baton is not too far away. Federer is 40 and facing another rehabilitation after knee surgery, while Nadal has a foot injury which will keep him out the rest of the year.

The fact that there is a group of players all around the same level is helping the pretenders believe they can finally make that Slam breakthrough.

“Probably [we] all want to be the first ones to make it,” Medvedev told reporters at Flushing Meadows on the eve of the Open. “Actually Thiem is the first one, if we can call it NextGen, which we are not anymore, but we were kind of in this group, he was the first one to do it last year. Out of the big three, only Novak is here, who is of course going for the Grand Slam.

“Stefanos was in the final of Roland Garros, two sets up [on Djokovic]. I was in the final in Australia, not two sets up but still in the final. We’re going to try to get (Djokovic).

“This competition to be the first one of these young guys to win a Slam … I think everybody wants to do it.”

For many years, the biggest issue always seemed to be that to win a Grand Slam, the chances were that a young player would have to beat at least one, and sometimes two of the big three to win a major title.

Wawrinka did it in 2014 when he won the Australian Open and at Roland-Garros in 2015, but the younger players have fallen short so far, sometimes managing a big victory but then finding another roadblock in their way.

Tsitsipas beat Federer to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal in Australia in 2017 only to be hammered by Nadal, and he was overhauled by Djokovic at Roland-Garros this year. Medvedev was stopped by Nadal in the 2019 US Open final and by Djokovic in Australia in February.

This time, the road to the Grand Slam final is a bit less complicated.

Zverev, who won at the Olympics and the recent Western & Southern Tournament in Cincinnati, knows he and the others are close.

“We all miss them, we all love them to play forever,” Zverev said of the big three. “(But) at some point they will have to retire.

“I think the Cincinnati tournament and other tournaments this year also showed that the competition and the rivalry that we have with the younger guys — the top four or top five guys with Medvedev, Tsitsipas, myself, Rublev and (Matteo) Berrettini, we’re having great battles, we’re having very entertaining matches.”

Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas and Berrettini (at this year’s Wimbledon), have all made Grand Slam finals. Medvedev, Zverev and Tsitsipas have all won the ATP Finals. Their time may finally be here.

“I’ve been two points away (from the title) last year here,” Zverev said. “I’m very happy to be back here, because now I can feel like I can go out on that court and I can prove myself, whether I got better since last year, what actually happened. I feel like I’m playing great tennis this year.

“The top three guys, they’ve been dominating for the past 15 or 20 years. We might never see that again. Don’t expect this group of guys to be the next Djokovic, Federer and Nadal. I don’t think the four of us are going to win 20 Grand Slams in the next 15 years each. That’s not how it’s going to go.”

Zverev is confident about the future but knows the high bar the big three established.

“I think we’re going to split them among us maybe. But the dominance those guys had is something you see once in a lifetime probably. All of us, we’re in that kind of path. We share kind of the same goals and aspirations.

“I personally believe that all of us have a good game to get to Grand Slam titles. It is important that we’re able to showcase that level of tennis in these kind of tournaments as best as possible to represent our generation of tennis in the best possible way.”

Djokovic remains the standard, but the pack is closing in.

Kimye Lives?????!!!!

I don’t know why you, the readers of Jezebel dot com, love reading about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West so much (every comments section on every blog about them is like “mmmmm yes could I please have one (1) more of this?” and “love it when Jez covers Kimye, personally”), but here you go! “By popular demand,” she wrote, hoping that the intended irony would come across quite legibly.

Anyway, Kim and Kanye might not be over! At least, that’s what TMZ is saying. A source told the outlet that the two are “working on rebuilding the foundation of their relationship.” So, I guess that means their whole wedding dress stunt at the latest Donda listening party might not have been fully a stunt? I mean, besides the way that literally everything Kim and Kanye do is a stunt.

  • Speaking of the aforementioned Donda listening party, Kim’s publicity team appears to be in full-on damage control mode, telling every tabloid that will listen that she totally wouldn’t have shown if she’d known that repentant homophobe DaBaby and alleged serial abuser Marilyn Manson were also going to be there. [People]
  • Some unnamed insider says that Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are “so madly in love” and that “there’s a lot of buzz in their circle about an engagement being in the works.” Also, it might be soon? But also it might be never?? “They see each other as life partners,” the source continues. “They don’t need a piece of paper to be happy, but Ri’s a real romantic and her friends and family—her mom, especially—would love to see her married.” [Us Weekly]
  • Now, I’m not saying that Rihanna’s mom, Monica Braithwaite, called up Us Weekly while pretending to be some anonymous insider in order to further mom-guilt her unwed daughter into finally getting hitched. I’m merely suggesting its possibility, perhaps. Regardless, shout out to moms! [Mothers Enthusiast Quarterly]
  • JoJo Siwa wants to play Lady Gaga in a biopic someday. I think I speak for everyone when I quote the legendary, Oscar-winning Mo’Nique and say: I would like to see it. [Variety]
  • Harvard is “educationally abusive,” says Teen Mom alum Farrah Abraham. [Page Six]
  • James Corden, Camila Cabello, Billy Porter, and Idina Menzel did a flashmob in the middle of Los Angeles traffic to Jennifer Lopez’s “Get Loud.” What are my rights? [The Independent]

Usain Bolt announces he will release his debut album next week as he returns to the spotlight following the birth of his daughter Olympia

He recently became a dad for the first time in June, when his partner Kasi Bennett gave birth to a daughter named Olympia Lightning.

And Usain Bolt has announced he will release his debut album next week, following a four-year-long retirement consisting of event appearances and brand endorsements.

The Jamaican sprinter, 35, will distribute his highly-anticipated Country Yutes LP through his very own label, 9.58 Records, which has seen him drop singles such as It’s A Party and It A Work already.

Taking to Instagram last week, the eight-time Olympic Gold Medallist shared the artwork for his masterpiece.

It sees the man of many talents hanging out at his home studio with his manager and childhood friend Nugent ‘NJ’ Walker.

Wearing an eye-popping pink-and-black striped tee and matching shorts, Usain’s impressive workroom overlooks an exotic pool, complete with inflatables and overhanging palm trees.

‘”Country Yutes” Debut Album Pre- Save 03.09.21 ⚡️⚡️⚡️,’ the Lightning Bolt penned in his caption.

Usain bid farewell to the 100-metre track after tearing his hamstring at the 2017 World Athletics Championships,

His career change shouldn’t come as a surprise to fans, since he told Zip 103 FM back in February that he was ‘working on some new rhymes’.

‘Knowing the whole pandemic, we’re not trying to rush anything, we’re taking our time to make sure the music comes out at the right time,’ the fastest runner in the world began.

‘We also have an EP that we are working on, so that should be something interesting. We’re just trying to get a foothold, trying to make people understand that we’re not just here joking around.

‘We’re serious about the music, so we’re just going to take our time. Just like in track and field, it’s all about work and dedicating and just taking our time,’ he concluded.

It comes after Usain’s partner Kasi Bennett, 31, gave birth to the athlete’s first child on June 14, a daughter named Olympia Lightning.

The proud dad took to Twitter soon afterwards to wish his beau a happy birthday as they begin a new chapter of their lives together.

Usain uploaded a series of images of Kasi draped in a flowing ballgown as she sat cradling their little girl.

He wrote: ‘I want to wish my gf @kasi__b a happy birthday. I get to spend ur special day with u. I want nothing but happiness for u & will continue to doing my best keeping a smile on ur face.

‘We have started a new chapter together with our daughter Olympia Lightning Bolt [sic].’

US pulling troops out of Kabul airport after devastating attack, two ‘high profile’ ISIS targets killed – Pentagon

The US is reducing its troop presence at Kabul airport, ahead of the planned American departure date and following a devastating suicide attack. The Pentagon claims to have killed two “high profile” terrorists in response.

The US has started to pull its troops out of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Saturday. While some 5,800 American troops were stationed there at the peak of the US’ evacuation mission, that number had dwindled on Saturday to below 4,000, Reuters reported. The Pentagon will no longer provide updates on troop numbers.

The pullout comes as the US’ planned withdrawal date of August 31 draws closer, but also in the aftermath of a devastating suicide bombing that killed 13 American troops, two British nationals and some 90 Afghans, including 28 Taliban members.

Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K), a regional offshoot of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), claimed responsibility for the attack. The US launched a drone strike early on Saturday morning in response, targeting an alleged “planner” behind the bombing.

The US strike killed an ISIS-K “planner,” and another “facilitator,” as well as wounding another member, Kirby told reporters on Saturday. “The fact that two of these individuals are no longer walking on the face of the Earth, that’s a good thing,” Kirby added. “It’s a good thing for the people of Afghanistan.”

Kirby said that the US would not release the names of the two men killed. He also refused to confirm or deny eyewitness reports that US troops opened fire on Afghan civilians in the chaotic aftermath of the suicide bombing.

ISIS-K and the Taliban share a hardline interpretation of Islam, but the groups are bitter adversaries. However, as the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan from the Afghan National Army over the last month, its fighters sprung droves of inmates from jails seized along the way. While many of these inmates – under American supervision until the recent US pullout – were Taliban members, others were ISIS-K fighters, now believed to be at large throughout the country.

“Thousands” of ISIS-K prisoners were let loose, Kirby told reporters on Friday. The Pentagon spokesman blamed the Afghan military for the jailbreaks, saying that “they did have responsibility for those prisons and the bases at which those prisons were located…and unfortunately those were the bases the Afghans didn’t hold.”

Though the Taliban and ISIS-K are opposing factions, the Taliban condemned the US drone strike. A spokesman for the militant group told Reuters that “the Americans should have informed us before conducting the air strike, it was a clear attack on Afghan territory.” The Taliban claimed on Friday to have arrested three ISIS-K members involved in the airport attack.

Kirby told reporters that the US still plans on completing its final withdrawal from Afghanistan by August 31. “Nothing has changed about the timeline,” he said.

As of Thursday, some 1,500 Americans remained unevacuated in Kabul, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Also speaking at Saturday’s press conference, Major General Hank Taylor said that out of more than 117,000 evacuees flown out of Kabul since the US evacuation began, “the vast majority” were Afghan refugees and Special Immigrant Visa applicants. Approximately 5,400 were American citizens.

Pakistan intends to run Taliban govt in Afghanistan through Haqqani network: Experts

With the Haqqani commanders in Afghanistan being assigned important responsibilities in the last few days ever since the Taliban takeover of the war-torn nation on August 15, experts feel that Pakistan wants to run the Taliban government and will have a major say in the important decisions taken by the Afghan militia in the days to come.

Leaders such as Khalil-ul-Rehman Haqqani has been appointed as the new security chief of Kabul, while the son of Haqqani network founder Jalaluddin Haqqani, Abdul Aziz Abbasin, has been given the charge of managing the supplies of arms and ammunition to Taliban troopers who have been trying to get control of the Panjshir valley.

Referring to the series of new responsibilities given to important commanders of the Haqqani network, experts said that Pakistan would try to dominate the important decisions in the war-torn nation.

They also admitted that the Taliban at this juncture will not open a channel of confrontation with any of the other militant groups operating in the region, including Al Qaeda.

Noting that the Haqqani network and the Taliban, in general, have been the domain of the Pakistani military and its intelligence wing ISI since the late 1980s, former diplomat Anil Trigunayat said that they fought with the US, Saudi Arabia, and the Soviet Union in the past and since then, they have been closely connected with the Pakistani design.

“The Haqqani network is a key of Pakistan to hold the Taliban. It is also one of the groups which are against India and have been trained totally by Pakistan. It takes most of the decisions on the behest of Pakistan,” Trigunayat said.

The Haqqani network is a powerful group that is part of the Taliban but takes instructions from Islamabad, and the Taliban are not in a position to stop them, he added.

Similar views were expressed by defense expert Major General G.D. Bakshi (Retd), who said that Pakistan has been using the Haqqani group, Taliban, and other terror outfits to destroy Afghanistan. Now that the new Taliban have seized power there, Pakistan wants to play a pivotal role in Afghanistan, he said.

“Pakistan is trying to play smartly and it will pressurize the new administrative set up through the Haqqani network to have an important say in the governance of Afghanistan indirectly,” Bakshi said.

Another West Asia expert, Nishikant Dubey, said that within the Taliban, there are two groups — Pak Taliban and Afghan Taliban.

Pak Taliban comprises Al Qaeda and Jaish-e-Mohammed, which are in direct control of Pakistan and the ISI has been providing them all aid such as weapons, medical assistance, and free access to the country for long. Therefore, they will be working on the instructions of Pakistan, Dubey said.

“ISI is also pushing its trained terrorists to join the Taliban forces which are evident from the rising number of Taliban militia, which rose from 70,000 to around 1,10,000 in the last six or seven days,” Dubey said.

The Haqqani network is based out of North Waziristan in Pakistan and has been operating along the Afghan border since the 1980s.

Protests in Berlin for and against coronavirus restrictions

BERLIN (AP) — Protesters filled the German capital again on Saturday to demonstrate against the government’s coronavirus measures, despite bans against several gatherings.

Police had banned nine planned demonstrations for Saturday, including one from the Stuttgart-based Querdenker movement, the most visible anti-lockdown movement in Germany, which united a disparate mix of those opposing vaccinations, coronavirus deniers and right-wing extremists. A court ruled in favor of allowing one event, planned for 500 people, on Saturday and Sunday.

Still, like the last round of protests in early August, thousands ignored the bans and turned out to voice their opposition to government measures. With chants of “We are the people!” the protesters made their way through Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte neighborhoods.

More than 2,000 police officers were stationed around the city to respond to those who showed up despite the bans. At one protest Saturday evening in Mitte, German media reported that police used pepper spray to disperse a crowd unwilling to leave once the protest had ended. The crowd eventually thinned as it began to rain.

Meanwhile, a counter-protest complete with techno music drew a crowd of several thousand as well. Those demonstrators back government restrictions to slow the spread of virus and oppose the Querdenker movement, stressing Berlin’s diversity and advocating for more social cohesion.

Berlin police said they dispersed the counter-protesters when the crowd became too big to allow for social distancing.

The Saturday protests came amid a debate in Germany about whether to impose restrictions on unvaccinated people, a question taking on more urgency as daily infections rise. Germany reported 10,303 new daily infections on Saturday, up more than 2,000 since last week.

Similar protests took place in Berlin in early August, which ended in clashes with police and hundreds of people detained.

5 thoughts about Eagles’ trade for Gardner Minshew

That was my first thought when I heard the Eagles traded a late-round pick in 2022 to acquire Gardner Minshew from Jacksonville on Saturday morning.

The Eagles traded away a conditional sixth-round pick to get Minshew, an obvious upgrade as their third-string quarterback in 2021 and an extremely cheap and adequate backup option in 2022. The most this trade will cost Howie Roseman and the Eagles is a fifth-round pick. Low risk, high reward.

It’s obvious that the Eagles value the quarterback position, even more than most teams in a QB driven league, and they just got a pretty decent one with experience for a Day 3 pick. To me, it’s a no-brainer.

Here are five thoughts about the move:

1. The most obvious takeaway from this trade is the Eagles just got a clear upgrade in their quarterback room. Nick Mullens got off to a hot start in training camp but plummeted and was awful in the preseason. Minshew is clearly better than Mullens. With 20 career starts under his belt, Minshew has completed 62.9% of his passes for 5,530 yards with 37 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He’s come back to Earth after the early stages of Minshew Mania but as a backup he’s pretty good. As a third-stringer? He’s excellent.

Nick Sirianni always pushes competition and that quarterback room just got a clear upgrade.

2. Joe Flacco is still the Eagles’ backup for now but he’s on a one-year contract in 2021. Meanwhile, Minshew is just 25 and has two years left on his rookie contract as a sixth-round pick. So the Eagles overpaid for Flacco this year but they’ll pay Minshew just $850,000 in 2021 and just $965,000 in 2022.

No matter what happens this season, no matter who the starter is in 2022, I expect Minshew to be a cheap and solid backup for the Eagles next season. There are going to be the theories about Deshaun Watson — those rumors aren’t going away — so Minshew could be Watson’s backup in 2022. Or he could be Hurts’ backup. Or he could be the backup for a rookie next season. No matter, he’s a cost-controlled quarterback who’s easy to keep around.

3. The first thought many had when the trade went down was that maybe there’s another move to follow. And that could be true. Maybe the Eagles will try to ship Flacco off right now for a pick. But it might make more sense to keep Flacco as the backup and Minshew as the third-stringer until Minshew learns the offense.

But if we’re in Week 5 and a quarterback goes down somewhere across the league? You’d have to imagine that Roseman would then be willing to trade Flacco and get a pick in return.

4. Don’t think of this trade as a statement on Hurts. Sure, the Eagles haven’t named him their starter and maybe they’re not fully committed to him long-term. But I wouldn’t worry about this bothering Hurts; he’s not fragile. There are some quarterbacks you’d worry about if you brought in a guy like Minshew, who has a decent resume and a drive to be a starter. But if anything, this could bring out the best in Hurts. He’s not afraid to compete.

And if you’re worried about WIP callers clamoring for Minshew in Week 6, know that Hurts won’t be.

5. Some folks won’t like the idea of the Eagles’ using three spots on their 53-man roster for quarterbacks. I get that. But we know how much the Eagles value the position and had Mullens played well this summer, they might have kept him on their roster. And we’re also entering a 17-game season with COVID-19 questions so the Eagles are lining up some contingency plans. Right or wrong, the Eagles are going to continue to put assets into the position. They’d rather have a valuable third-string quarterback over a sixth corner or a seventh linebacker.

Shinty: Kinlochshiel beat Kyles to reach their first Camanachd Cup final

Kinlochshiel reached their first Camanachd Cup final with a 2-0 victory over 21-times winners Kyles Athletic at Taynuilt.

Kyles fought off an injury nightmare to challenge strongly in a game settled in stoppage time.

Daniel MacVicar scored four – including a hat-trick in less than two minutes – as Oban Camanachd thrashed Ballachulish 10-0 in the Celtic Society Cup.

Glenurquhart upset Lovat with a 3-2 MacTavish Cup first-round victory.

And the highlight of the interim leagues was a five-goal blitz from Ewan Fraser as Glasgow Mid Argyll defeated Aberdour 6-2.

It took almost an hour for Kinlochshiel to break down a resolute Kyles side and club legend Keith MacRae gave them the lead before Jordan Fraser added their second in the 91st minute.

Their final opponents will be Kingussie or Lovat, who meet in the last four next Saturday.

At Ballachulish, MacVicar got Camanachd’s opener in the Celtic Society Cup after just four minutes and then put his team 4-0 up with his whirlwind hat-trick midway through the first half.

Daniel Cameron got two and Garry Lord, Conner Howe, Innes Jackson and Ross Campbell grabbed one each to complete the rout.

A first-minute goal from David MacLennan set Glenurquhart on their way and Connor Golabek doubled the lead. Greg Matheson soon made a game of it with a penalty, but John Barr equally quickly restored the two-goal cushion before Matheson got a late second for Lovat.

Had MacVicar been less prolific, Fraser’s first three for Mid Argyll in just eight minutes early in the second half might have been the day’s fastest hat-trick. Fraser added two more late on, with Brian Slattery having started the scoring. David MacKenzie and Ruairidh Reid struck back for Aberdour.

Newtonmore had a 5-1 home league win over Caberfeidh with two from David MacDonald and one each from Iain Robinson, Max Campbell and Declan Brannan. Caberfeidh’s consolation came from Kevin Bartlett.

Also in the senior leagues, Fort William had a 2-1 home win over local rivals Lochaber. Grant Disher put Fort ahead, Jack Dignan provided a quick equaliser and Lewis Morrison’s strike proved to be the winner.
